»Working in the
Corona crisis«

The corona pandemic has been affecting social life in Germany for almost two years. The world of work is also affected. In almost all industries and professional fields, Covid-19 and the containment measures are having a noticeable impact on workers.

The nationwide working world monitor is a joint project of the University of Osnabrück (Prof. Dr. Hajo Holst) and the network of cooperation centers for universities and trade unions in Lower Saxony and Bremen. The aim of the monitor is to uncover and visualize the consequences of Covid-19 in the working world. The project took two years as we conducted surveys at intervals of several months and to get a clear insight of the impact of the pandemic.

Challenges & Opportunities

Issue & Challenge

The challenge lies in addressing a very broad target group: professionals from all industries sectors in Germany and motivating them to take part in the surveys. Not all target groups can be reached through the normal university website.

Another challenge was to visualize all the data and results of the surrveys. And also integrate them in the web application and provide an easy access for all end-users.

Opportunities

The topic was so current and new, so i was a great opportunity to support a professional expert team of the university Osnabrück

Solution
  •  accesible and responsive webdesign
  •  create a platform where all results will be published
  •  social media campaign/ email marketing

Research

Branches of work
In Germany there are different branches of work. The first step was to categorize the different branches. The research work came from the University Osnabrück and I designed an chart to have an better overview to really understand who will be the target group of our survey.

The survey was conducted in four survey waves by the University of Osnabrück. In general, it is about the experiences of the professionals:

Questions
  • How do you experience your work in times of the Pandemic?
  • How do employers and employees react?  Which protection measures are implemented?
  • How can childcare and work in the
    connect everyday life?
  • And how do you perceive the political interaction with the pandemic?

Illustrations are a nice way to stand out, especially in a branch like uinversities. The illustrations are made by Palo Stanley and are called “Humaaans”. I chose them as they fit the topic perfect. I used especially illustration who demonstrate humans of different colors, backgrounds and handicaps which fits perfect to the study programm. I added the Corona-mask to the illustration myself and made some small changes.

Concept

The focus of the website should be on promoting the workers’ survey. After the four survey waves, the respondents should be informed in detail about the results. In the survey, the wishes and questions of the target group were primarily examined and evaluated. The aim is to make the consequences of Covid-19 visible for the world of work. The target group should be questioned directly, interactively involved and offered a scientific evaluation to create more clarity.

Webdesign &
Implementation

After organizing the structure and content of the website. I created different visual concepts for the webdeisgn. The first one won because of its easy user guidance. The design elements depict like a small discovery journey into the south German history. Parallax effects are used to get the user into the story and content.

Interactive Results

All results are interactive so the user can choose which data he wants to see. For each topic you can filter between total, men/women, west/east Germany and professions. The survey was  repeated three times from 2020-2022. As a result we generted three different pages for the results.

Responsive Design

The Webdesign is also responsive and works on all devices. This is especially important for the potential respondents of the survey as they will come directly to the website through the social media campaign on their phone.
